5 Dental Resolutions for 2019

Dr. Taylor and all of us at North Royalton Family Dental want to wish you a very Happy New Year! January is half over, so many of you are already working hard on your New Year’s resolutions. Some of the more common resolutions are exercising more, eating better, and saving more money. These are all great resolutions, but your North Royalton Family has 5 great New Year’s resolutions that focus on your dental health, too!Dental Resolutions for 2019

    1. Drink Less Alcohol

Drinking too much alcohol can wreak havoc on your body, but did you know it can also affect your teeth! Sugary cocktails and yeasty beers, when consumed too often, can lead to gum recession and decay. Try to limit your intake this year, and please remember to drink responsibly.

    2. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Not only do fruits and veggies improve your overall health, but they can also improve your dental health! Crunchy fruits and veggies like apples, carrots, celery, and bell peppers help to scrape away plaque and food particles. And, they also taste great!

    3. Quit Smoking

Smoking can lead to lung disease and a lot of other health problems, but it can also contribute to gum disease, yellowing teeth, and even some cancers of the mouth. Dr. Taylor challenges you to quit smoking this year; your teeth and body will thank you!

    4. Brush and Floss More

Try to brush at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day. This will help to prevent cavities, gum disease, and other decay. When you floss, make sure to go under the gum line of each tooth, to get any plaque that your toothbrush might have missed.

    5. Schedule Regular Dental Appointments

When you schedule regular dental appointments with your North Royalton family dentist, you can treat and prevent more serious dental conditions. At our dental office, you can expect attentive, skillful care that caters to your unique needs. See why some call us the best family dentistry in North Royalton today!

Tooth-Friendly Stocking Stuffers

As you’re wrapping up your holiday shopping (pun intended!), you may be wondering what to get for stocking stuffers. Dr. Taylor and his hygienists at North Royalton Family Dental have some great tips! From the latest dental tech to tooth-friendly snacks and toys, we want to help you make this season one to remember.Tooth Friendly stocking stuffers

  • Kids’ Toothbrushes

If you’re working on teaching your kids good dental habits, getting a unique toothbrush is a great idea. You can get toothbrushes that are themed for their favorite tv shows or movies, like Frozen or Minions. A unique toothbrush that your child can call their very own can help encourage regular brushing. You can also get toothbrushes that sing a theme song, so your child can time how long they brush.

  • Bluetooth Toothbrushes

For your older children or spouse, bluetooth toothbrushes are the latest in dental tech! These electric toothbrushes can connect to a phone in your app that tracks your brushing time, technique, and overall cleanliness. Get this great toothbrush for your older loved ones, and they’ll love the results!

  • Healthier Holiday Snacks

Some of the most popular holiday snacks are candy canes, chocolate, and M&Ms. While these are all delicious and fine in moderation, they can cause decay in your teeth. Your North Royalton cosmetic dentist recommends you get dark chocolate-covered nuts and berries and dried fruit. These treats have less sugar than other candies, but are still full of flavor!

  • Cosmetic Dentistry

If your loved ones are looking to improve their smile, consider buying a cosmetic dentistry procedure at our dental office! Dr. Taylor and his team offer teeth whitening, veneers, and tooth reshaping. Our veneers can quickly correct minor imperfections like misshapen or gapped teeth, and in-office teeth whitening can get you faster, longer-lasting results than the drugstore brands.

  • Small Crafts or Toys

Get your crafting game on by creating little ornaments for your family members. These ornaments can be dated for this year, so when you’re decorating for next year, using these ornaments can bring back the wonderful memories of this year. Small toys are also a great way to fill the stockings, without including a lot of candy.

Dr. Taylor and his team want to wish you a very happy holiday and a great new year! We hope you like these tips, and we are excited to share this holiday with you. If you’re looking to purchase a cosmetic procedure, give us a call today.

5 Thanksgiving Foods that can Stain Your Teeth

The winter holidays are a great time to enjoy time with friends, family, and eating delicious food. Dr. Taylor and his team members are excited to celebrate the upcoming holidays with you! But, as your North Royalton cosmetic dentist, we want to make sure that you’re still taking care of your dental health. Did you know there are some popular Thanksgiving foods that can stain your teeth? Dr. Taylor made a list of 5, and what you can do to avoid staining your teeth, while still enjoying the holiday!5 Thanksgiving foods that can stain your teeth

  1. Cranberry Sauce

We all know that cranberry sauce shouldn’t be anywhere near white shirts, carpet, or furniture–but did you know that the same could go for your teeth? Because of its dark color, cranberry sauce can stain your teeth. And, the high acidity in cranberries can wear away your enamel. If you love cranberry sauce, however, just make sure you eat it in moderation, wash it down with water, and brush your teeth afterwards.

  2. Wine

Like cranberries, red wine is a known perpetrator of stains. The same, unfortunately, also applies to white wine. Your North Royalton cosmetic dentist recommends you limit your red wine intake, and also make sure you’re washing it down with water.

  3. Coffee

Coffee is another pretty obvious danger to tooth stain, but you may be drinking more than normal during the holidays. If you’re trying to keep up with cooking, cleaning, and spending time with your loved ones, and you need a caffeine boost, drink your coffee! Just make sure you brush your teeth afterwards, and limit your use of creamer.

  4. Balsamic Vinegar

If you’re a family that serves salads at Thanksgiving, balsamic vinegar may be a popular dressing. While it is a lot lighter and more versatile than your typical ranch dressing, its dark color and acidity can stain and harm your teeth. But if you must have your balsamic, try eating it in moderation.

  5. Pie

Not just raspberry and blackberry pie! Any pie with a lot of sugar can wreak havoc on your teeth if you eat too much of it. So, save some of that pie for later, and be sure to brush and floss afterward!

Even though some of the most popular Thanksgiving foods can harm your teeth, we don’t want you to go without your favorites! Just make sure you give your teeth some extra attention and care after the holidays. If you need your teeth whitened for the holiday, or to make sure your teeth are in the best possible shape, give us a call today! And, Happy Thanksgiving from our office to you!

5 Spooky Facts About Dental History

Nothing says spooky more than weird dental facts from the past. Imagine what teeth were like back in the 1700-1800s. Not scared yet? Maybe some of these facts will get you in the spooky Halloween mood.5 spooky dental history facts for Halloween.

  1. Brushing Your Teeth Twice a Day is a Recent Change

In the early 1900’s only 7% of American households brushed their teeth or at least had toothpaste in their houses. During World War 1 most of the Army recruits had such poor oral hygiene that the military considered dental disease a national crisis. By the end of World War 2, most Americans were brushing their teeth daily. During the war, the military required soldiers to brush their teeth twice a day, and then they brought that habit home after the war. Today, brushing your teeth daily should be a habit in your household.

  2. Barbers and Blacksmiths were Your Dentist

In the early 1800’s, there was no such thing as a full-time dentist. Instead the job fell on blacksmiths and barbers to perform dental work. Barbers already worked with heads, even though hair and teeth are wildly different. And the blacksmiths skill with molten metal came in handy for filling cavities. Nowadays it is kind of a scary thought to think that your barber and blacksmith could do your dental work. Luckily today we have well trained professionals like your North Royalton Family Dentist.

  3. Beeswax Filled Ancient Cavities

An ancient tooth found in Slovenia had fillings made of beeswax. This may be the earliest known example of restorative dentistry, researchers say. The tooth is 65 centuries old and was found about 100 years ago. It was likely meant to reduce pain and sensitivity. Today, we have much better materials and tools to fill your cavities. And it’s a procedure that can be done quickly and with little pain.

  4. A Dentist Helped Invent Cotton Candy

Yep, you heard that right. The cotton candy making machine was co-invented by dentist William Morrison, with the help of confectioner John C. Wharton. They originally packaged it in wooden boxes and marketed it as “fairy floss.” While cotton candy used to only be available during carnivals today it is available at almost every supermarket. Sugary foods are okay to have in moderation but be sure to brush soon afterward or cavities could be in your future. This is especially important after a sweet filled night of trick-or-treating.

  5. Dentures Were Made of Animal Teeth

The tale that George Washington’s teeth were made of woods is totally false. His dentures were in fact made from human, cow and horse teeth and ivory. Today, dentures are made up of acrylic resin or porcelain. They are also made to look like your natural teeth and can really improve the quality of life for individuals missing some or most of their teeth. This is a service that we offer at your North Royalton Cosmetic Dentistry.

While some of these facts might not be as spooky as we led you to believe, they are interesting and it shows you how far we have come in the dental industry today. At North Royalton Family Dental we are always finding ways to help our patients get the solutions they need to their dental issues. Let us help you solve your spooky dental needs for optimal dental and overall health.

Try to change out a few of the pasta and cheesy items and add more fruits and vegetables to your lunch menu. Packing more of these items can also make you feel full for longer.

    2. Make Your Dinner Work For You

If you are interested in eating a healthier lunch, chances are you are interested in eating a healthier dinner too. Why not kill two birds with one stone? 4. Same same, but different

5 Foods that Can Whiten Your Teeth

We already know about the foods that can stain our teeth; things like coffee, black tea, white wine, blueberry pie, Indian curry and balsamic vinegar. But, did you know that there are some foods that can help whiten your teeth?

5 foods that can whiten your teeth

There are foods that can help with stains!

While every whitening method in cosmetic dentistry has its pros and cons, naturally whitening foods are also good for you! Our team at North Royalton Family Dental wants you to get in on this little-known secret! Several of mother nature’s treasures, like raw vegetables and fresh fruits, contain key ingredients that aid in preventing decay and combat hard-to-remove plaque. Don’t believe us? Try them for yourself. Here are 5 delicious and healthy foods that act as a natural tooth whitener.

  1. Broccoli

One of our favorite ways to eat crunchy broccoli florets is to snack on them raw instead of steamed. This nutritious veggie acts as a natural toothbrush that can clean plaque from hard to reach places. The high levels of iron found within also shields enamel from stains!

  2. Oranges

How many times have you devoured a juicy orange and immediately tossed the peel away? Unlike most other citrus fruits, orange peels are not acidic. The peel has a unique variant of vitamin C that can be used as a gentle alternative to synthetic whiteners! Using it is quite simple: Wash off the orange peel thoroughly in clean water. Take the fleshy white interior and rub it across your enamel for a safe and effective alternative tooth whitener.

  3. Strawberries

Now, this little trick has been known about for decades. Combining strawberry paste with baking soda allows the malic acid in this bright red fruit to act as a natural tooth whitener. Don’t forget to brush afterward though, there’s lots of sugar in those tasty berries!

  4. Carrots

The abrasive fibers in this crunchy snack provide a cleaning process that tough to remove plaque doesn’t stand a chance against! After snacking on a few raw carrots, try taking one and giving your teeth a quick polish!

  5. Cheese

Lactic acids in cheeses will help guard teeth against future decay. Chose cheese that’s hard to slice, like aged gouda. The hardened surfaces can also nix stains that are caused by the build-up of food particles.

  6. Come Visit Us!

We hope you have fun using and sharing our natural teeth whitening secrets! While it is a great alternative, it might not always be the fastest option. If you’ve got an important event coming up or you just want to look your best and have a smile you’re proud of, call our friendly staff at North Royalton Family Dental today to schedule an in-office cleaning or teeth whitening!

Tooth Jewelry: What is it, and is it Safe?

Putting decorations on one’s teeth is a trend that might not be such a good idea. Piercing a tooth or cementing jewels onto your teeth can cause some unexpected damage. This was a popular thing in the ‘90s and removable mouthpieces called “Grills” were trendy in the early 2000s. “Grills” are a little more practical because the person wearing it could remove it at any time. It was more comfortable to wear because professional dentists and orthodontists custom fitted it to the client’s mouth. This is not the case with most tooth jewelry.

What is Tooth Jewelry?

Tooth jewelry and decorations are jewels placed in or on the tooth, or multiple teeth. Tooth tattoos are also treding, which are only placed on dental crowns. Having a crown placed requires permanent alterations to your natural tooth.  The piercing and cement and process is similar to installing braces or fillings, and while professional dentists and orthodontists should be the only ones using these tools, this is not often the case. These implants and decorations can cause severe and permanent damage to teeth and gums if applied incorrectly. Tooth jewelry is not as easily changed or switched out like earrings or piercings. A piercing in the tooth is permanent, and with orthodontic-grade cement, these jewels can last for a long time.

Why Your North Royalton Family Dentist Says No to Tooth Jewelry

North Royalton Family Dentists want your families to have the happiest and healthiest teeth and smiles. We dedicate ourselves to having the highest standards for cosmetic and standard dental care. Tooth jewelry is not beneficial to your teeth and can cause short term and long term problems. Everyday routines such as brushing and flossing could become more difficult and increase your likelihood of cavities. The inside of your mouth is an extremely sensitive part of your body and be easily damaged.

Having jewelry and gemstones permanently placed on your teeth can be extremely uncomfortable during daily activities like speaking and eating. Food can get stuck on the jewels, and they may even scratch the inside of your lips or mouth.

Your North Royalton cosmetic dentist can provide you with many cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, veneers, and Invisalign. When it comes to improving your smile, we recommend seeking out a qualified dentist to help you make your cosmetic decisions.

The Mouth-Body Connection

Dentists and doctors over the last decade believe there is a connection between our body health and dental health. There are now dozens of peer-reviewed articles by medical professionals linking gum disease with chronic illnesses in our bodies.

Learn about the Mouth-Body connection

The Mouth-Body Connection

When we think about improving our overall health, most of us don’t think about oral health first.  The truth is that a lot of us think of our teeth the same way we think about other cosmetic features like our nails and hair. Grocery store aisles and mall kiosks are full of whitening products. We just don’t place the critical attention on our oral health that we do on the rest of our body.

Just how much of a difference can it make? Some doctors say that having a healthy mouth can add as many as six years to your lifespan! Taking care of your teeth and gums can significantly improve the quality of those years as well.

Don’t Think This is Relevant to You?

According to the Center for Disease Control, “One out of every two American adults aged 30 and over has periodontal disease. In adults 65 and older, prevalence rates increase to 70.1 percent.” We can all do a better job taking care of ourselves.

Mouth-Body Bacterial Transfer

What happens in your mouth does not actually stay in your mouth! The mouth is one of the most significant pathways for bacteria to enter into our body. There are actually several ways that harmful oral bacteria can spread into the rest of our body. Let’s take a look at some of them.

  1. Harmful oral bacteria can be ingested or swallowed. While we sleep, our bodies go into a cleaning and renewing cycle. During that cycle, our mouths are generally stagnant. Saliva does not circulate which leads to waking up to high levels of bacteria.  When we swallow, even from a clean glass of water, the bacteria enters our body.
  2. Passive absorption is a significant factor in the transfer of harmful bacteria into our bloodstream. Our mouths were intended to absorb a great deal of nutrients and foods, it is coated in mucous membranes and has a high concentration of capillaries near the surface. The mouth is actually one of the body’s most absorbent organs.
  3. According to the Journal of Periodontology, “The mouth can be a major source of chronic or permanent release of toxic bacterial components in the bloodstream during normal oral functions.” The infection can get worse when oral plaque solidifies into tartar and makes contact with our gums. Our impaired gum line, due to the tartar, can allow harmful oral bacteria to enter into our blood. Having oral bacteria in our blood might not seem like a significant part of our bodies overall function. But, its presence can directly add inflammation to the body. The swelling caused by inflammation restricts our cardiovascular flow and promotes and magnifies aging and disease.

These are just a few of the many ways that harmful oral bacteria is being shown to affect our bodies with a variety of health issues including; heart disease, strokes, diabetes, respiratory problems, pregnancy complications, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and even memory loss.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Fortunately for all of us, Periodontic medicine is proving to us that we have far more control over our overall health than we previously realized. Given that those with severe Periodontal disease are 40% more likely to suffer from chronic diseases, preventing oral disease can make a lasting and significant impact on our lives. Here are a few simple steps you can take between now and your next appointment;

  1. Rinse, swish and spit in the morning to get rid of excess bacteria before eating, drinking or swallowing.
  2. Brush at least twice a day.
  3. Floss every day.
  4. Avoid eating sugar or carb-heavy foods.
  5. Add lots of vegetables to your diet.

Why Should I Go to a Dentist for Teeth Whitening?

Do you want a smile you are proud to share with others? A whiter smile is a simple way to restore your confidence. In-office teeth whitening is one of the most popular treatments at our North Royalton family dentistry. We can whiten your smile several shades in just one or two appointments! Visiting with a North Royalton cosmetic dentist is the best way to find out how white your smile can become.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Some people try to whiten their teeth at home, only to find out they are not able to get their desired shade. Others end up bleaching their teeth too much that it causes tooth and gum sensitivity. Professional teeth whitening is one of the cosmetic dentistry procedures to leave to your dentist. Why? Here are some reasons why a professional teeth whitening treatment is better than an at-home teeth whitening kit:

  • Cosmetic dentists use a higher grade peroxide to whiten the teeth faster and safely.
  • They can also use laser lights to enhance the shade of your teeth
  • We safely treat the teeth and gums to prevent painful sensitivity and gum recession

Professional Dental Cleaning

When you visit a dentist for teeth whitening in North Royalton, you will also receive a dental cleaning. Dental cleanings remove plaque, allowing our team to whiten all surface areas of the tooth. At-home cleanings will not be able to get to the same surface areas of the teeth, which can lead to multiple color shades on a single tooth. If there are concerns related to your teeth, we can make repairs to the teeth prior to starting the tooth whitening procedure.

What to Expect

We will use rubber shields to shield the gums when we start applying the bleaching agents. We apply the bleaching agent and wipe it off after 10-45 minutes to apply another layer, whitening your teeth at least one to two shades in a single visit. Our teeth whitening treatment includes a higher dosage of carbamide and peroxide to ensure the teeth are several shades whiter. Over-the-counter teeth whitening strips normally include only six percent of peroxide, which makes it harder to achieve the white shade you want.

If you are tired of stained teeth, it is time to call in the professionals at North Royalton Family Dental for all your teeth whitening needs! Schedule a consultation today and be on your way to a brighter, whiter smile!
